About the Summit at Rockefeller Foundation

The Rockefeller Foundation is convening a high-level meeting of global leaders in the launch of an Urban Summit, Innovations for an Urban World, at its Bellagio Study and Conference Center in July 2007. The Summit’s main purpose is to highlight the challenges cities face in an era of increasing globalization and to orient philanthropic organizations, donors, and international lending institutions to invest in solutions to reduce urban vulnerabilities.  Global Studio will present outcomes from GS Johannesburg in the last week of the Global Urban Summit, which is dedicated specifically to the consideration of urban planning and design pedagogy and practice. The Foundation’s sponsorship of a “design challenge” through Global Studio in Johannesburg aims to stimulate discussion and agenda-setting among key practitioners and educators in the design and planning professions to better engage in the following emerging topics of concern at the Foundation: urban shelter, water, and sanitation; climate change adaptation in cities; and urban population health.  Of course, beyond the Rockefeller Foundation itself, many donors and stakeholders are increasingly focused on these topics as part of their poverty reduction agendas. As such, the Summit will focus on highlighting critical knowledge of “what works” in urban innovations that might be taken to scale to improve urban resilience against vulnerabilities.
