INVITATION

On behalf of the University of Sydney, we invite you to People in Place in People, the 1st International Symposium on Environment, Behaviour and Society, being held from 9-11 February 2006 in Sydney, Australia.

Environment, behaviour and society (EBS) has been an internationally recognised centre of research and teaching at Sydney since the early 1960s. Fundamental research has been conducted on the interface between physical environments, behaviour, society and culture, with implications for architecture, urban design and urban planning. The Australasian People and the Physical Environment Research association (PaPER) was founded at Sydney in 1980, the PaPER Journal edited and published by the Faculty since then, and the 11th international conference, Environment-Behaviour Research on the Pacific Rim, held in Sydney in 1998.

The EBS Group now invites you to an inaugural 3-day international symposium – an opportunity for intensive dialogue on three themes in environment, behaviour and society research with implications for policy, planning and design. Each biennium we will select themes that reflect key issues in the field around the world. For 2006 the themes are Cultural Identity and the Built Environment, Children Youth and Environments, and Environmental Experience Perception and Cognition, each broadly defined. These biennial Symposia will provide a forum for academics and professionals to exchange knowledge gained from their perspectives in a way that will ultimately enrich the local and global communities of which we are a part. Proceedings will be published for each Symposium to lodge the key papers and findings in the archival literature in the field.

Papers on the Symposium themes are welcome and, following a peer-review process, will be accepted for oral or poster presentation and publication in the Proceedings. Three to six renowned researchers and practitioners in environment, behaviour and society will give keynote addresses; there will also be a special conference dinner, special events, opening reception and other opportunities to interact intensively with colleagues.
