My research addresses the theory, practice, and education of design. The research area Computational approaches for studying designer cultures explores new ways of thinking about design through investigations that combine the theoretical and methodological rigor of science with the intellectual and conceptual possibilities of philosophy. Science and philosophy work in tandem: philosophy gives us the viewpoints for thinking about design while computation allows us to interpret and materialise these viewpoints on data sets that present characteristics of design. This research area is supported by fundamental research in Textual extraction of designs, applying computational linguistics to design corpora to examine accounts of design and designed works in text. In the practice of design, I am interested in Mobile design studios which allow designers to indulge in their peripatetic tendencies. For design education, the research responds to the need to infuse design education outside of formal classroom learning through Informal learning in design.
